About Us

Founder Hubert Meijers knew how to deal with it and in 1931, with his wife Maria Janssen, put down the first pillars of what is now called Tuincentrum Meijers. The first wooden greenhouses were placed just before World War II and replaced by a first large greenhouse by the next generation Gerard Meijers and Yvonne Borkelmans. Plants were no longer supplied by train and tram, but with their first "volkswagen" they were collected from the growers in the region around Ghent. The surface expanded as did the entire shopping complex and after the arrival of the third generation, Robert Meijers, Viviane and Danielle with Piet, from 1969 onwards, it was rebuilt and invested.

In 1983 the first olivetti computer was purchased, the harbinger of a new era. Together with Mia Leyssen literally and figuratively the fourth generation was taken care of. The store was rebuilt and received, among other things, a new decoration department and the first artificial Christmas trees made their appearance.

Now garden center Meijers is headed by brother and sister Erwin and Inge Meyers. Fuel oil was replaced by gas, the glass by super-insulating polycarbonate and the solar panels are the exponents of the new sustainable environmental policy. The layout and layout of the indoor & outdoor departments were seriously taken care of, the façade renewed. The webshop came instead of the fax and together with the website it gives a new boost to our rich history.
